Over the summer, our Year 13 students successfully completed their Gold DofE Practice and Qualifying Expeditions in the Peak District and Dartmoor. Despite a few showers and the occasional gust of wind, the students embraced the challenge and thoroughly enjoyed the experience – particularly the opportunity to wild camp under the stars (or clouds). The Peak District, renowned for its dramatic limestone dales and rolling moorlands, provided a stunning backdrop for their practice expedition. Students navigated rugged terrain, tested their teamwork and developed vital expedition skills, all while soaking in the breathtaking scenery. Dartmoor, with its mysterious tors, ancient forests and open heathlands, offered a contrasting but equally exhilarating environment for the Qualifying Expedition. Fun fact: Dartmoor is home to wild ponies and has a rich history of prehistoric settlements, adding an extra sense of adventure to the route. Throughout both expeditions, students demonstrated remarkable resilience, problem-solving and leadership. They handled wet weather, challenging navigation and cooking in the outdoors with great enthusiasm. The experience not only strengthened their expedition skills but also forged lasting memories and friendships. Completing these challenging journeys marks a significant milestone in their Gold DofE journey, laying the groundwork for the remaining sections of their Gold DofE.
This year, over 20 Year 12 students have signed up for the Gold DofE, setting a new record for participation. Over the coming months, they will be embarking on an exciting and challenging journey to prepare for their summer expeditions. Like the Bronze cohort, the training programme is comprehensive, covering navigation, route planning, campcraft and safety skills, ensuring students are fully prepared for the rigours of extended expeditions. However, training for Gold is more advance than Bronze because of the higher altitude and rougher, wilder terrain. Alongside these practical skills, they will also be planning detailed expedition routes and food menus, encouraging teamwork, problem-solving and strategic thinking. In addition to expedition preparation, participants are working to balance their busy academic schedules with the Physical, Skills and Volunteering sections. They are encouraged to set personal goals, develop new skills and engage in meaningful community projects, ensuring a well-rounded and enriching DofE experience. The enthusiasm and commitment shown so far have been excellent, with students demonstrating initiative, resilience, and collaboration during training sessions. With steady progress and dedication, this Year 12 cohort is set for an unforgettable Gold DofE journey, gaining valuable skills, memorable adventures and personal growth along the way. KKP
