Medical Society - Term 6 Update

Medical Society - Term 6 Update

What have we been up to this term?

This term Medical Society has had a lot of things going on, from doing trial exams, talks from professionals and universities about studying medicine and the vast careers in the medical field, to going to universities on trips. We also spent this term completing trial exams and with some students starting preparation for the forthcoming UCAT tests.

UCAT session with Year 13s

Towards the end of Term 5, we had the pleasure of welcoming back three Year 13s, Jennane Sithpavananthan, Mathesh Sithpavananthan and Omar Elkhouli, who were all members of the past Medical Society Leadership team, to give some insight on the UCAT exam. During the session, we ran through the different sections and discussed the recent changes to the UCAT, how they would affect us and how it may change the way that we as Year 12s prepare for the forthcoming exam. We went through some example questions and the session was an opportunity to be exposed to the time conditions of the actual exam. Being given this opportunity, we were also able to gain advice on ways to revise, timelines leading up to the exam and the best ways to prepare for each section.

Canterbury Christ Church University Trip

In June we went on a trip to Canterbury Christ Church University and we got to see many interesting things. We went to see their simulation suites where they put students in a variety of different situations; from lifelike models of patients to a CPR demonstration. Afterwards we got to see around the buildings and much of what CCU had to offer. The trip was a valuable experience that gave us a better understanding of what it's like to study healthcare at university. It showed us how important hands-on learning is and helped us think more seriously about possible future careers in the medical field.

Osteopathy talk

An osteopath from the European School of Osteopathy recently visited our school, offering a fascinating insight into the field of osteopathy. With a blend of human anatomy and massage techniques, it was explained how osteopaths assess and treat a range of conditions by focusing on the body's structure and function. The visit enlightened us on how this career combines medical knowledge with a holistic approach to health and sparked curiosity among students on osteopathy as a career, especially given its growing recognition within healthcare and ability to create strong patient interactions over time to see your own work progress.

Workshop working on skills required and needed to be a Medical Professional

During one of our afternoon sessions we got together in groups to discuss the Good Medical Practice Guide and how we can apply it to ourselves. Collaboratively we created mind maps of experiences and activities we have completed that align with the values of a good doctor. This helped create a resource that we can use for our personal statements and even our future interviews!
