Silver DofE - Term 5 Update

Silver DofE - Term 5 Update

From the 14th to 16th May, our Year 10 Silver DofE participants took on their Practice Expedition – an experience designed to stretch their skills and confidence in the outdoors. Building on the knowledge gained during their Bronze Award, students practised tent-pitching and camp setup, while also learning basic first aid techniques, including how to deal with minor injuries and what to do in an emergency.

The heart of the expedition was a two-day, one-night journey around the Meopham area. In compliance with DofE regulations, each group must conduct at least seven hours of activity per day. Throughout this time, they developed advanced map reading and navigation techniques, such as contour interpretation, pacing and using handrails and tick features for accuracy. Despite some challenging terrain (overgrown vegetation covering public rights of way, for example) and warm weather, the students remained resilient and motivated throughout.

This practice expedition provided a valuable opportunity to refine their teamwork, time management and route planning skills in a realistic setting. The experience has undoubtedly prepared them for their Qualifying Expedition in October 2025 in Ashdown Forest.

Congratulations to all participants for their commitment and effort – they should be very proud of what they have achieved so far.

Sincere thanks to Mr Berry, Miss Couves, Mr Griggs, Mr Humphrey, Mrs McLean and Mr Townsend for their valuable contributions over the few days. KKP
