Hockey - Term 4 Round up

Hockey - Term 4 Round up

GGS kicked off their hockey season against Norton Knatchbull but struggled early, trailing 0-4 at halftime. However, they refused to give up. After pulling two goals back to make it 2-4, they sensed a comeback. Jai Sandhu and Oliver Simpson came agonisingly close to scoring, but the match ended in a 2-5 defeat.

Next, GGS faced a tough challenge against the Duke of York's Military School. After falling behind early, they responded with a brilliant top-of-the-box strike from Oliver Bolingbroke off a short corner. Despite going behind again, Jai Sandhu’s skilful play in the box brought them level once more. However, they narrowly lost 2-3 in a hard-fought battle.

Still full of belief, GGS travelled to St Olave’s School. Lucas Roberts stepped in at centre-back for the first time this season, while Lawrence Ogieriakhi made his team debut. GGS dominated the match, securing a commanding 4-0 victory. Lawrence bagged two goals, contributing to the team’s first win of the season, while Lucas helped maintain a clean sheet at the back. Freddie Weston played well in the midfield, putting in some clean tackles.

GGS had confidence heading into their next match. In the penultimate game, GGS visited Ashford School. They dominated possession, and after a goalless first half, a breakthrough felt inevitable. A composed one-on-one finish from Oliver Simpson put them ahead. Callum Taylor’s driving run down the left wing setup Oliver Bolingbroke for a second goal, and Jacob Barker’s clever play along the byline allowed Oliver Simpson to complete his brace with a textbook finish. Defensively, Tom Humphreys and Cemal Kanaga’s pressing ensured Ashford had no real chances on goal. A special mention goes to Jude Ryan, Riley Shaw, Tom Banks, and Jude Mills: all Year 9s stepping up for the team. They have one more tournament ahead—good luck, GGS!
